Whether you go there for your Swiftie friendship bracelet supplies, fabric, or the adorable jewelry section, JOANN has been the O.G. craft and fabric store lots of us were raised with, going back to the 1940s.

But if you’re also a fan of JOANN’s home decor, there’s a new safety recall to know about on an item that might have seen an extra appeal around back-to-school season. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission published an alert that JOANN stories nationwide, as well as joann.com, are recalling 9,700 desk lamps after “three reports of the battery compartment melting or popping while the lamp was charging with the USB cord.” The CPSC says this poses a risk of fire.

The battery-operated desk lamps in question are from the brand Place & Time. Three models sold for $22.99 between May and July 2024:

  • pink: model number 4843351A
  • green: model number 4843351B
  • cream: model number 4843351D

The CPSC says the model number can be found at the bottom of the lamp’s base.

The battery-powered lamp of approximately 12 inches high at full upright position could have come in handy for students in cramped dorms without easy access to outlets, or just a pleasant addition to a nightstand or crafting space as we move toward the darker months.

The CPSC reports that no injuries or accidents have been reported to date, but advises anyone who purchased the lamp should return it. Customers who bought it with no receipt will receive a store credit for the amount. Otherwise, “Consumers who are unable to return the lamp to a store can email a photo of the purchase receipt to [email protected] with the subject ‘Desk Lamp Recall Refund’ to receive an electronic gift card for the amount on the purchase receipt, or a $23 store credit if the consumer does not have the receipt and provides a photo of the lamp.”
