Stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s can be such fun spots to pick up an imported snack or ingredient you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere.

But today, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning customers if you bought candy at either of these two retailers. The FDA just published an announcement that Authentik Fudge of Sainte-Julie, Quebec, Canada, is recalling 840 units of 5.6-ounce Montreal Fudge brand Chocolate Fudge with Nuts. The announcement indicates the recall is due to potential mold contamination.

While the FDA says no illnesses or injuries had been reported to date, “a consumer complained about some mold pieces inside the purchased box and we found also some remaining unpacked sealed products at the manufactured place that had beginning signs of mold.”

Sold in a triangular, cardboard “gabled”-style box, the product was distributed to Marshall’s and then further shipped to TJ Maxx stores on June 19 and 20, 2024. According to information available at press time, it’s possible the product has been sold in recent weeks or days.

The FDA advises the product was sold in Marshall’s stores in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Wyoming.

The product was also sold in TJ Maxx stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.

Other product details are the following, reportedly located on the back of the container:

  • Lot code 0241500805 with expiration date of 2025/MR/01 (Editor’s note: MR is the French abbreviation for “March“, making this expiration date March 1, 2025)
  • Lot code 0241690105 with expiration date of 2025/MR/17
  • Lot code 0241690205 with expiration date of 2025/MR/17

As a remedy, the FDA states: “Consumers who have purchased those affected products are urged to destroy them or to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company AUTHENTIK FUDGE/MONTREAL FUDGE: [email protected] or at phone number (450) 649-1331 / 1 877 313-1331 post 210 or 205.”
